PENAMPANG: UPKO wants to contest in four of the 13 new state seats at the next general election (GE14).
“We have requested for Bengkoka, Menggaris, Dambai and Telupid,” acting deputy president Datuk Siringan Gubat told a press conference after opening UPKO Women, Youth and Komulakan joint convention here yesterday.
“These four areas have a Kadazan Dusun Murut (KDM) majority population and we have substantial number of members to justify our request,” he said.
Citing Telupid as an example, he said of the 6,900 voters in the area, some 3,300 were UPKO members. “If we can recruit another 700 members, we will have 4,000 voters,” he added.
Meanwhile, UPKO secretary general Datuk Donald Mojuntin hoped that distribution of the new seats would be done fairly to ensure a balanced representation of Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties in the state.
“I hope that BN will distribute the seats fairly to reflect the power sharing concept,” Donald said. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak who is also BN chairman will open the UPKO convention today (Saturday).
