KOTA KINABALU: Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau has won the United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (Upko) president post uncontested as nomination period ended today.
The result was expected after all the party divisions in its respective triennial general meetings approved the resolution calling for a no-contest on the president post as well as expressing full support to Madius as president for the 2018-2021 term.
The MP for Tuaran is the current deputy president and was appointed acting president following the retirement of Tan Sri Bernard Dompok in 2014.
For the deputy president post, Secretary General, Datuk Donald P Mojuntin, as expected also won uncontested.
The Permanent Chairman post was retained by Datuk Michael Malanjun, uncontested, so as the Deputy Permanent Chairman post by a new face, Fredoline Jominoh.
However, for the five vice president posts, nine candidates have been nominated namely, Kadamaian Assemblyman, Ewon Benedick, Kuala Penyu Assemblyman, Datuk Limus Jury, Kuamut Assemblyman, Datuk Masiung Banah, Senator Datuk Dr Lucas Umbul, Paginatan Assemblyman, Datuk Abidin Madingkir, Keningau Upko Chief, Datuk Laurentius Ambu, Drs Monih Epin, Sipitang Upko Chief, Datuk Pengiran Lalung and Papar Upko Chief, Gilbert Syam.
Thirty-six nominations were received for the 16 supreme council member posts.
All the nominees must sign the nomination acceptance form basically to confirm their intention to contest in the party election on Oct 14.
For the Wanita wing, Madius’ wife, Datin Dr Jainah Sintian has given way to her deputy Datin Juliana Janni to lead the movement for the 2018-2021 term.
Juliana won the Upko Wanita chief post uncontested.
In fact, there would be no contest for all the posts including the 12 committee member posts for the party women’s wing.
Those nominated and not challenged were Sylvia Olas for the permanent chairperson post, Datin Flora Pingai for the deputy chairperson post, Nazlin Jemandan for the deputy Wanita chief and Misnah Rabanou for the vice Wanita chief post.
An anticipated hot election for the Youth wing top posts, however fizzled out after nominations closed with no contest declared for the Youth chief, Youth Deputy Chief and Vice Youth chief as well as deputy permanent chairman posts.
Upko Beluran Chief, Felix Joseph Saang was not challenged for the Youth Chief post vacated by Arthur Sen following his resignation from the party.
Kennedy John Angian retained the Youth deputy chief post while, Petrus C Mojuntin gets the Youth vice chairman post.
For the Youth permanent chairman post, two names were nominated namely Lenus Sampil and Adrian Siponong while the deputy permanent post saw Aliyu Zinin winning uncontested.
Twenty six names have been nominated for the 12 committee member posts.
For Upko Komulakan, the wing has a similar situation with its Wanita counterparts as all the posts were uncontested too.
As a result, Willyfrous Darinsok has been declared as the new Upko Komulakan chief replacing Ewon Benedick who had relinquished the post after exceeding the age limit for a Komulakan member.
Upko Komulakan new deputy chief is Selvestone Junit while Mohd Affi Bazli Liman is the vice chief. Winning the permanent chairman and deputy chairman post, respectively were Aeronnathanael Timoty Singkin and Donysius Salati.
There were only 12 names including Ceaser Mandela Malakun nominated for the 12 committee member posts.
