PENAMPANG: The Penampang Barisan Nasional wants the heads of the Village Security and Development Committees (JKKK) and Urban Community Committee JKDB) in the district to be elected instead of the current method of appointments.
Headed by Datuk Donald Peter Mojuntin, the group said the decision to recommend the election of all JKKK and JKDB chairmen was made by BN Penampang at its recent meeting on January 12.
“The decision was made by consensus among all BN component parties in Penampang,” said Mojuntin Sunday, adding that they paid a courtesy call on the Penampang District Officer, Puan Lovita Koisun, to formally hand over a letter with the recommendations.
“JKKKs and JKDBs are the ‘ears and eyes’ of the government in terms of safety and development in their respective area. The chairmen would have more credibility and authority if voted by the people. Thus it would be easier for them to undertake their duty. Further, this decision is in line with the wishes of the grassroots,” he added.
“After some discussion, BN Penampang is very happy that the DO was more than agreeable to our proposal.”
Mojuntin also said that during the discussion, it was resolved that the DO will call for a meeting with both the PPM (“Pegawai Pembangunan Masyarakat”) of Kepayan and Moyog to set out the qualifications of candidates, nomination period and guidelines for the election process, on 22 January 2016.
“Once all these are done, the election process will start by February. It is estimated that all elections for 52 JKKKs and 5 JKDBs in Penampang will take 2 months to complete,” he said.
“We believe that the people will choose their JKKK and JKDB chairmen wisely.
We urge them to come out to vote when the time comes to undertake their democratic right. The DO and her committee will ensure that sufficient notice is given to the grassroots before the election date.”
